Small Club, Big Stars, Crumbling Egos, Twitter?
Two close friends and myself are at a small club in Delaware eagerly waiting for the line-up of a celebrity and two comics to come. We sit in the club, which has about 12 tables all filled to capacity. Somehow, we scored a table up front where it was just the three of us. The bill performing at this club: Patrick Swayze, Jim Norton and a closing performance by Patton Oswalt. Swayze goes on first and he starts giving a self-help tutorial. It's awkward because it is under the guise of self help but it was mostly gibberish and bullshit. He then joined our table when he was finished speaking. After him, Jim Norton comes out, waves and sits at our table. Patton Oswalt takes the stage and starts his routine. He seems to be on anti-depressants and goes into a rant of how his life sucks which isn't funny. He constantly asks the audience to laugh at the psuedo-punchlines. Although the jokes weren't funny, which was a shock and a dissappointment, the wreckless abandon of him shedding his ego was in itself comedic. The show ends abruptly and our group, minus Swayze and Norton, leave the club. The back exit connects to a mattress store. We see Patton sitting on a Sealy Postropedic Mattress and we chat him up. He seems happier that we decided to talk to him and he gives us business cards with his Twitter account listed on it. I immediately check a computer for this account and start laughing at the one liners he posts there.
